    Sun Loving with Cetaphil Sunscreen

Summer has officially hit Johanneburg which means time spent outdoors in the sun, sea or the pool. While we are out enjoying the sunshine, it’s important we remember to protect our skins with a good, broad spectrum sunscreen.

There is alot of questions that go with why suncreen is so important. How much sunscreen one should be applying and how often to reapply. So with this post I hope to educate you on the importance of suncreen and why Cetaphil Sun SPF50 Lotion should be an essential in your beauty regime!

Sun Loving with Cetaphil- Guru Sunscreen

This sunscreen is great for all skin types, but especially beneficial for sensitive or oily skin’s. It’s hypoallergenic, won’t block pores and is water resistant. The formula can be used of both face and body, and it’s so lightweight that it’s even suitable to wear under makeup (I’ve tried it out and can attest to this).

The formula is lightweight and oil free, and I would describe the consistency as more of a cream. However, it does absorb quickly just like a gel would and doesn’t leave a greasy film or sticky feeling. One of the best things about this formula is that it also nourishes the skin. This is thanks to the inclusion of Vitamin E in the formula.

What is the difference between UVA & UVB Rays?

Both UVA and UBA Rays contirbute to sunburn, skin ageing, eye damage, melanoma and other skin cancers. UVA Rays Causes cellular damage and increases the risk of skin cancer as well as ageing. UVB Rays causes sunburn which is a significant risk for melanoma.

    What does sunscreen actually do?

Suncreen filters but does not block UV radtion. Unfortunately no suncreens offer 100% protection agianst UV radiation. These are the percentages that the fillowing SPF’S cover:

    • SPF15+ Filters 93% of UV radiation
    • SPF30+ Filters 97% of UV radiation
    • SPF50+ Filters 98% of UV radiation

Why do I need to apply sunscreen 15-20 min BEFORE going into the sun?

Because the UV filters need 15 to 20 minutes to start working. Most are triggered as you rub the sunscreen onto your skin, but they need some time to start doing the job properly.

Cetaphil Sunscreens are Non-Photo Toxic- What does that mean?

Photo-toxicity is a chemically induced skin irritation that requires light to be triggered – it is not a reaction caused by the immune system. In essence, it’s a type of photo sensitivity where the skin’s response resembles an exaggerated sunburn. Cetaphil sunscreens are suitable for even the most sensitive of skins.

How often should you wear sunscreen?

Sunscreen should be worn EVERY SINGLE DAY, all year round. Summer and winter, sunscreen is essential!

Recently, I was sent the Cetaphil Sun SPF50+ Lotion to try out. Now, if you’ve been following my blog , you’ll notice that I have really become a fan of the Cetaphil brand and have blogged about them previously. You can read about some other great products here.

  • Mother Nature Did Me Dirty…

    Mother Nature Did Me Dirty…

There I sit, in a room filled with expecting parents. I sit quietly on my own, notepad and referral documents in hand, just watching.

Glancing across the room, I see a couple holding hands, grinning so loving to each other while the expecting mother rubs her swollen belly. To the left of the couple, sit’s a father and son anxiously waiting for mom to return from blood tests. I can’t help but wonder if everything is ok? I close my eyes for a brief moment to send guardian angels thier way.

Deep in thought a little while later, my focus shifts to the far side of the waiting room. There sits a teenage girl, not more than 15 years old, 12 weeks pregnant. I knew she was that far along because I overheard the father of the teenage girl repeat those 3 words in sheer rage to the petrified teenage boy sitting next to his daughter. The boy took the girls hand, looked at her with just love in his eyes and said : “It will be ok”.

    “Nicole Coutinho, please come through.”

    The Little Guru- Surrogacy Journey

    It’s a vicious circle…

Gynae appointments are never fun. Ask any woman if they enjoy going to the gyane and thier answer would be, 9 out of 10 times, that they hate it with every being in thier body! It’s awkward and uncomfortable but so very neccessary.

So there I sit, meeting a brand new gynae, telling him all about my sexual health and all the inbetween. I then get to the real reason behind my visit. I go on to ask him the difficult question; “Is there a chance for a Pulmonary Hypertension patient to have a safe pregnancy?” Dr H finished writing his sentence, closed my file looked me straight in the eyes and said: “Mother Nature did you dirty, my dear”.

It wasn’t a sentence that was new to me at all. Almost every single Dr I crossed paths with told me just that. A PH patient cannot fall pregnant, it’s absolutely forbidden. Touché Mother Nature- touché

I just was hopefull that after 10 years, the medical world would have advanced in some way or another. Perhaps I was too eager. 10 years isnt enough time for a medical breakthrough like that. Mother nature did me dirty.

Dr H and I went on to talk about other options and where the right place would be to start. Surrogacy is the next best thing for any person that suffers from a life threatening illness, especially Pulmonary Hypertension. The appointment was insightful and dreadful at the same time because somehow, this appointment felt much more important than the others.

    All hope gone…

The drive back home was occupied by thoughts of the emotion that I witnessed in the waiting room before my appointment. A beautiful couple on thier way to starting a family, a father and son worried about the unknown health status of the expecting mother and the teenages that had unprotected sex which led them to an “oops”. I couldnt help but feel anger towards the teenagers situation. Why is it that couple’s that really want children have so much difficulty falling pregnant, while teens or as a matter of fact, ill suited folk go about having, “oop’s” left right and centre. I can’t help but think how unfair it is sometimes, but there has to be a reason right? RIGHT?!

I arrive home to an excited husband, eager to know how the appointment went. I think my husband was as hopefull as I was that MAYBE, just maybe there was a chance. He always see’s things in life as half full and my heart just broke when I uttered the words, we cant fall pregnant, to him that evening.

It really hit home this time. We both looked at each other and cried, hugged and walked to seperate rooms to process what was happening. I felt immense guilt in that moment because it was my fault. I’m the one who is sick and can’t carry our child. Im the one who is stopping us from having a family. I’m the chink in the chain and there is absolutely nothing I can do about it.

Light at the end of the tunnel…

Our home was filled with a range of emotions. Discussions consisting of wether we wanted to go through with surrogacy and if we were strong enough for it.

M was anti surrogacy at the time. He saw it as us missing out on the bonding time, the growing belly, the morning sickness, the cradling of the unborn child. We would be missing out on the whole experience of being pregnant. I agreed that we were missing out on alot but at the end, we would still get a baby that was ours. That’s the goal.

I called Vitalab and asked if there was someone that we could speak to prior to seeing a Dr to just talk about Surrogacy.

We met with a young woman named Brownyn, who is an egg donor herself and gave 3 children to 3 different families. We were in awe.

I sat there admiring how this woman gave so much joy to so many people and how I hoped that I would be able to give that same joy to the person sitting next to me in that room. The appointment ended and we walked out hand in hand.

Giddy with excitment and somewhat nervous, I looked over to my husband for a sign.

There it was. The spark was back in his eyes and in that moment, it was all I needed. We were ready for whatever was coming our way.

    We were ready.

Burt’s Bees sent zero waste to landfill – which you have to agree is an amazing achievement. They turn their waste by-products into biomass-based fuels, electricity, and even cement. Amazing Right?

Delighted to recieve PR drop with a few products, I was excited to put them to the test!

    Burt’s Bees Lip Balm

Burt’s Bees Lip Balms have a little something for everyone. Apart from the flavour, each of these balms are infused with real natural ingredients to nourish lips and keep them nourished. There is a stunning variety of flavour to choose from!

    Lip Shimmer in Cherry

Thoughts: So my favourite part about the Lip Shimmer is the tingle sensation you get from the cool burst of peppermint when applied. The Cherry Lip Shimmper is VERY pigmented and is not particually my colour, so for me personally, I would opt for a lighter pink or nude. The Lip Shimmer retails for R99 each

    Burt’s Bees Cuticle Cream

This Lemon Butter Cuticle cream promises to offer intense moisture to nails and cuticles. Packed with sweet almond and cocoa seed butter to soften cuticle while the Vitamin E and sunflower oil nourish brittle nails!

    Cuticle Cream

Thoughts: I must be honest. I didn’t ever use cuticle cream before I recieved some in this PR package and I have to say, I am hooked! Seeing a huge difference in my nails has me obsessed with cuticle cream. The Cuticle Cream retails for R125 each

Yes, I know what you are thinking, the price point is a little high for a lip balm, but I can assure you that it will be a lip balm that will shine above the rest because it really works!

    The Story of Arthur Kaplan…

At the age of 18, Arthur Norman Kaplan (1928-1997) entered the family business, a jewellery store which his grandfather, Henry Balzham, established in Pretoria in 1889. It seems that Arthur was destined to inherit a passion for jewellery, one which stemmed all the way back from his great uncle, who was known to be the personal jeweller of Paul Kruger.

  • The “B” Word…

    The “B” Word…

The infamous “B” word, or rather, the sentence that we all love to hate…

“So when are you guys having a BABY?”

Isn’t it funny how this is the question on everyone’s lips literally right after you get back from honeymoon, or at most family functions you go to or even worse when you attend a babyshower you get a random hand touching your stomach saying “When is your one coming?”

Now, please dont take my tone to be angry or irritable, as I too find myself being the culprit of asking that exact question, but I have come to realise that it is such an impersonal question to ask.

How do you know if that exact person you’re asking isnt suffering from Infertility, endometriosis or an underlying medical problem? But in the same breath, I ask myself, why are woman not being more open about it?

Instead of saying: “Maybe next year” or “No No, not anytime soon, we still young”. We should say: “We actually going through some personal stuff and are taking it as it comes” – I honestly think people will understand and drop the subject until you yourself want to talk about it.

Now I get that by saying that, it just opens up the conversation to the questioner asking more questions that you not neccessarily ready to talk about openly.

    I’ve been there. I get it. It’s a Catch 22…

    The "B" Word- Surrogacy Journey

So this is where I step into the picture…

There has been a major baby boom within our family and friends. Babies from my side and my husbands side of the family and close friends and you can’t help but feel almost “pressured” into starting your own family.

It’s no secret that with an underlying medical problem, family and friends tread lightly around the “B” word with me. From the day I was diagnosed, Dr’s have warned me to be careful not to fall pregnant, due to the high mortality risk for women with this disease. Pregnancy affects nearly every organ, but perhaps one of it’s most dangerous aspects is the increase in blood volume within the cardiovascular system, which could be fatal for someone with pulmonary hypertension. I was also warned that many medications to help treat pulmonary hypertension can cause terrible birth defects. Pretty rough right?

Honestly back then, I didnt give it much thought. Well, of course I wanted to have children one day but now as an adult, the words ” You can’t fall pregnant“, takes on a whole new meaning for me.

It’s like I’m mourning the loss of the family and life that I thought I would have. It means I will never know what it feels like to be pregnant and to watch my belly grow. To have those “movie type’ moments where my husband cradles and kisses my belly housing our little bundle of joy. I will never know that feeling of complete and utter joy of being pregnant.

Sadness washes over me at the thought of what I would be missing out on, but it’s not to say that I will never have the chance to be called a mother.

So the next time someone asks me that infamous question with the “B” word, I’ll smile and answer: “As you know, it’s not easy for us and It’s really high risk for me, but we happy to say that we are looking into surrogacy”

John Frieda Strengthen and Restore Hair Range – Review

If you have been watching my insta stories (nicole_theguru), you would have seen that I was gifted with a gorgeous hamper filled with John Frieda haircare and other goodies! I was so excited about it that I started my John Frieda Strenghten and Restore hair journey that day!

John Frieda Strengthen and Restore Hair Range by The Little Guru

It honestly could not have come at a better time as I have been batteling so much with my hair lately. From tuffs of hair falling out by the hand full and may I add, at a ridiculous rate. To dry, knotty hair that no amount of argan oil seemed to help!

I seeked advise from hair dressers, my GP and even took to instagram, which to my suprise, many other woman were batteling with the same situation as I was.

I started taking Folic Acid for about 2 months which, to be honest, didnt make a difference at all.

So what is a girl to do you ask…? Well after 2 months of stressing about going bald, I came to terms with that maybe it was all part of being an adult. The ageing process, possibly my medication for my PH and daily stress. I began to accept that my thick locks were now going to be thin, dry , not so pretty hair.

    My Hair Journey

So ever since I recieved the hair products, I promised myself that I would completely devote extra love and care towards my hair.

Im the worst because often I would be too tired (lazy) to dry my hair before bed so I would simply wrap it up in a towel and go to sleep waking up to a head of tangled frizzy hair.. Not a good look at all!

Full Repair- Strengthen and Restore Range

I started off with the Full Repair Range. It consisted of a shampoo, conditioner and deep conditioner. It was the perfect range to start with to enrich my hair with all the godness that it was lacking.

Infused with Inca Inchi Oil, an Amazonian lightweight micro-oil rich in Omega-3, helps to restore brittle hair fibres as it cleanses. Reduces the risk of further breakage and split ends without weighing hair down. Formulated for all dry and damaged hair types, including colour-treated and chemically treated hair.

John Frieda Strengthen and Restore Hair Range by The Little Guru
Full Repair -Strengthen and Rescue Range

    First Impression/Results:

From the first wash my hair absorbed nearly all of the conditioner. It just showed how dry my hair was. I have honestly loved this range. It was exactly what my hair needed and it has transformed my hair completely from the get go!

The deep conditioning is a stunning product for extra nourishment. I have used it twice and my hair felt amazing after using it! The shampoo and the conditioner are amazing on thier own but it you really do have brittle, dry hair than definately add the deep conditioner to your hair regime.

The Strengthen and Restore Range is the perfect starter to get your hair healthy again.

Conny introduced us into a world where cosmetics dont need to cost a fortune and that most of the ingredients that we used to make our own Serum is actually used in top quality skin brands. Can you believe that we actually pay for the branding and packing of the product instead of the product itself, purley because it doesnt cost that much to make the skincare product! MIND.BLOWN.

After the introductions and insightful info, we put on our aprons and got started on making our own serums! We got grouped with 5 ladies per table and were guided through the whole process. • The Cetaphil Range is an Amazing Winter Go-To!

The Cetaphil Range is an Amazing Winter Go-To!

When the temperature drops, humidity levels in the air decrease and this causes the skin to dry out. To compound matters, at the first sign of cold weather we’re quick to turn up the heaters, take super hot baths and wash our bodies with skin stripping soaps. Is it any wonder then that our skin tends to be dry in winter? Neglecting to care for dry skin can lead to a host of skin conditions like severe itching, eczema and psoriasis. That’s why the Cetaphil range is an amazing winter go to for dry skin!

    The Little Guru- Cetaphil Review

For the past 6 months or more, I have been battling with extremely dry and itchy skin, especially on my legs. I have been rubbing, exfoliating and scrubbing my way through ALOT of products that claim to help moisture the skin. One product, which was gifted to me, really has taken first place in my beauty moisturiser favourites.

    Cetaphil Restoraderm Range

Cetaphil Restoraderm Skin Restoring Moisturiser (R279.95) and Cetaphil Restoraderm Skin Restoring Body Wash (279.95) has become my go to body wash and lotion of the season. Yes, I’ve tried many over past few months (some of which I love), but it’s this one that really has worked wonders for my skin!

    The Little Guru- Cetaphil Review
    Body Moisturiser and Body Wash

Formulated for very dry, itchy skin, this beauty contains ingredients and technology that helps repair skin’s protective barrier, while promoting hydration. In addition, it’s free of fragrance & colour (the two biggest skin irritants) and contains no parabens or nut oils.

The body wash itself looks a bit like moisturiser, but works into a good, gentle foam. While it does contain a sulphate (foaming agent), it also contains a whole host of skin-beneficial, nourishing ingredients like Shea butter, sunflower seed oil, allantoin and glycerin. It is also free from soap, so it gently cleanses without irritating or drying the skin. Also included are ingredients that enhance the skin’s integrity and actually help rebuild its natural barrier function (arginine & Sodium PCA).

    My Experience:

I have officially been using the products religiously for a little under 3 weeks and I can honestly see and feel a difference! My skin does still get itchy from time to time , but my scaly skin is non-existant and I’m left with smooth, moisturised skin!

    The Little Guru- Cetaphil Review
Dry itchy skin before stating with the Cetaphil Body Range.

The ingredients used in this beauty are FAR more superior, gentle, and kinder to the skin. So, if you have very dry, sensitive skin, suffer with eczema, or, like me, are just too damn lazy to apply a body moisturiser every night. The Cetaphil Range is definately worth a try!

Good news for mamas- They have a stunning range for your little ones too! Read all about it here.

  • The H2-Glow Facial was Unexpectedly Great…

The H2-Glow Facial was Unexpectedly Great…

It’s been forever that I had been for a facial and I was excited when I was given the opportunity to try out the revolutionary H2-Glow Facial™ at Ms Glam Nail Bar.

The last time I went for a facial, was before my wedding day and this year will be our 5th wedding anniversary! Where has time gone??

The Little Guru- Ms Glam Nail Bar
    Ms Glam Nail Bar

    What is the H2-Glow Facial?

The H2-Glow Facial™ is the latest technology in skin care! This stunning treatment is the newest advance in non-laser skin resurfacing. It is the only hydradermabrasion procedure that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection.

    The Little Guru- H2-Glow Facial
    3 Phase H2-Glow Facial

    How Does it Work?

H2-Glow Facial™ uses Vortex technology to cleanse, extract and hydrate, leaving skin glowing. It’s a 3 phase process that gives you incredible results:

    Cleansing Phase:
    • A peeling solution, with active ingredients such as salicylic acid and bark wood extract, is used in combination with Vortex technology to offer a deep cleansing action
    • This phase softens and loosens the skin, and removes (most) blackheads painlessly
    • Two different heads are used in the Cleaning Phase – one for the whole face and a second one that concentrates on the oily ‘T’ panel, offering specialised cleaning

    Infusion Phase:
    • Infusion Phase Vortex technology is used with either of the following:
    • Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate and plump
    • Vitamin C and Glycolic Acid brightening solution for skin brightening and pigmentation
    • Oligopeptides for wrinkles and sun damage

    Rejuvination Phase:
    • A mask and PDT lights (red or blue depending on the condition being treated) are used to replenish and recharge the skin – leaving skin healthy and glowing

The Little Guru- H2Glow Facial Process

Is it Suitable For all Skin Types?

Absolutely yes! Suitable for all skin types, the H2-Glow can help with oily congested skin, pigmentation, dry dehydrated skin and fine lines and wrinkles!

    The Verdict:

Now that winter is officially here, my skin was in desperate need of some hydration and so this facial happened at the perfect time!

The facial itself is so lovely. It’s literally painfree, as facial’s should be, apart from the tingly sensation from the infusion phase, that probably lasts 10 seconds and is totally bearable!

It’s safe to say we all hate the extraction part of the facial, especially around the nose area, that’s my biggest problomatic area as it’s just covered in blackheads! But the H2-Glow Facial is so gentle on the skin and penetrates deep to give your skin the ultimate cleanse.

The treatment itself took +-30 minutes and my skin felt amazing afterwards! It had such a beautful glow and I visibly could see the difference in my smile lines and overall texture of my skin.

The next day my cheeks did feel slightly sensitive, in the slightest, two small pimples popped up on my chin and an in-grown hair popped up on my cheek! Gross, I know but it facinated me because that’s how deep the products penetrated my skin to bring up all impurities beneath it! I had absolutely no redness at all which is great news for those sensitive skins like myself!

Overall, the facial was suprisingly great, with real time results that you can actually see! The therapist is a stunning lady that will treat your specific skin concerns. Every facial is tailored to your skin type for optimum results. Guys you will honestly see a huge difference!

The lovely team from Ms Glam has kindly given me a coupon code to get a HUGE discount off your facial!

    48 Hours in cape town

Here’s a few tips on how to explore Cape Town in 48 hours (Well we had aless then 48 hours in CT but it was totally worth it!

    Walk Around Town

Arriving on Friday night in Green Point at around 10.30pm , M & I just wanted to hear the crashing of the waves and feel the salty air on our face. No matter how late it is in CT, you will feel safe enough to walk the streets and look out into the ocean. Obviously be vigiliant at all times, but enjoy the freedom of just walking around town. We walked to the nearest garage to buy some snacks before we settled in for the night.

The best part about walking is that you get to discover things that you wouldn’t see if you were driving. We discovered stunning restaurants, a beautiful organic market, a lighthouse and a yummy gelato bar that we were definately going to visit the next day!

City Sightseeing Bus Tour to Table Mountain!

An absolute must when in Cape Town is to visit the iconic Table Mountain. The weather can certainaly be unpredictable in Cape Town, but when the weather is beautiful and sunny, you best get to that mounatin quick! We didnt get a chance to go up the last time we were in CT but we did you other great stuff which you can read about here and here.

We really did get lucky this time around because the Saturday the sun came out shining! So we didnt hesitate to book a ticket with the City Sightseeing Bus Tour which includes a cable way ticket up the mountain and set off to see the city from up high. For R330, you get to dicover and learn about CT’s history, like the Clock Tower, pit stops on long street and skipping the ticket office line at the cableway, giving you more time to enjoy the views from up top!

Eat your way through Cape Town!

CT is full of quirky, out-of-this-world restaurants that whip up delicious meals that will blow your mind! We honestly had a little gem right beneath our hotel room that we dined at for breakfast and dinner. The La Splendida hotel really did suprise me! The hotel rooms are so gorgeous and spacious and the restaurant is every bloggers dream- aesthetically pleasing at every turn!

The Sotano Moullie Point is an absolute must try! The food is spectacular to say the least and the vibe is rad. It’s definately a local favourite because the restaurant fills up quickly with regulars and locals!

    Visit the Weekend Market!

The city of Cape Town, for me at least, makes you want to be outdoors! I sat there on the Sunday morning peering out my window people watching. The lifestyle that people live in CT is so different from JHB. You see people running at all times of day, people walking there dogs, people sitting on the grass in the parks, people walking to and from markets carrying groceris home to make a wholesome Sunday Lunch. It’s just so lovely to see that healthy lifestyle. PS: I love that Green Point is so dog friendly!

We stumbled across the market the day before and thought it would be the last perfect little outing before we jetted back home. The Oranjezicht City Farm Market embodies Cape Town Living! Fresh home grown fruit and vegtables, beautiful blooms, locally made clothing and a ton of food stalls to enlighten your tastebuds!

Definately a market worth visiting- Opened Saturday and Sunday Only!
