  • Raw Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups!

    Raw Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups!

I have been having fun in my kitchen lately in terms of baking up storms of deliciousness! I had been wanting to make chocolate cups for such a long time since I had seen them on Gypsea_Lust (She is gorgeous and her photos are magnificent!) Insta stories that I finally gathered my ingredients and tried it!

With a few additions to the recipe, they actually came out pretty damn good if I say so myself! So because I had such great feedback from my Insta fans, I thought I would share my recipe here for you to try!
If you not a dark chocolate fan, then you probably won’t be a fan of these chocolate cups as they have a very dark chocolate taste. But give it a try, you might surprise yourself!

    Raw Chcolate Cups- Guru Style

    Ingredients:
100g raw cacao butter, melted over a double pot
    Half a teaspoon coconut oil
    2 heaped Tablespoons cacao powder
    1/4 teaspoon himalayan salt
1 ½ tablespoon of honey (add more or less to desired taste)
40g (2 heaped tbsp) natural peanut butter or almond butter
Various toppings- Peanuts, conconut flakes, rasberries, whatever your heart desires!
    Mini pie foil tins

    How to make:
    1. Begin making the chocolate mix. Stir all the chocolate ingredients together, (all other ingredients except the peanut butter) over a pot of boiling water in a glass bowl (bain-marie style) spoon 1/2 of the mixture into foil cups (approx 4), stirring between each spoonful to prevent honey setting on the bottom.
    2. Place moulds in the freezer to set for 5-10 minutes.
    3. Remove moulds from freezer and spoon 1 heaped tsp of peanut or almond butter (or both) in the centre of each. Using the back of a spoon spread the peanut butter into a disk that is slightly smaller than the diameter of the chocolate base.
    4. Add some toppings if you want them inside the centre of the cup too, or just leave it plain.
    5. Spoon the remaining chocolate mixture into the cups, ensuring the peanut butter layer is covered.
    6. Place in the freezer for 5 minutes.
    7. Remove from freezer to top with coconut flakes/ peanuts/ rasberries etc.
    8. Place back in freezer to set
    9. Enjoy!

    IMG 20181014 194056

    Notes:
I had purchased all my ingredients online from Faithful to Nature. The Raw cacao butter is pricey but it’s so worth it! As for the chocolate cacao powder, I used the Nestle Cocoa.
The chocolate will begin to melt quite quickly when removed from the freezer in warmer climates. Store in the fridge or freezer. Eat straight from the fridge or freezer!
If you want a version that doesn’t melt so quickly, try replacing the coconut oil with additional cacao butter as it has a much higher melting point.

Rich and chocolatey! Enough to curb any sweet craving.

  • Battle of The Cleansing Balms!

    Battle of The Cleansing Balms!

Back in the day, I was the girl that used make-up remover wipes to take off my eye make-up until one day it felt like I was actually removing my eyelids with every wipe! My eyes became so very sensitive to wipes which forced me to use baby oil for a long period of time which eventually caused me to get the tiniest pimples under my eyes!
    It. Was. Awful.

Long gone are the days where our only option to remove make up is makeup wipes. Don’t get me wrong, I still use them every now and again when I’m just too tired wash my face. The beauty industry is forever bringing innovative ways to remove make-up from our faces from Micellar Water (Love it), Cleansing Oils and Cleansing Balms! I have absolutely fallen in love with the Cleansing Balms- It’s a lot gentler on the skin and sensitive eyes and cleans up all traces of make up from the skin.

According to experts, a quick once over with micellar water simply won’t cut a good skincare routine. Double cleansing involves using preferably a cleansing oil or balm to break down makeup, SPF and sebum on the surface of your skin first, then follow it with a deeper water-based cleanse. This removes sweat, bacteria and old skin cell and will clean much deeper into the pores to remove any impurities.

So today I’ll be talking about 3 cleansing balms and which one I found more effective for me!

Clinique- Take the Day off Balm. (Retails now for R325)

I had seen and read so many reviews on this product for so long until I finally bought it and tried it out for myself!
The Take the Day Off Balm is exactly what it’s titled. It basically melts the make-up straight off your face in no time! Only a tiny bit is needed for the whole face which means that this tub of heaven is going to last you a long time. The balm melts into an oil while massaging it into your face and really cleanses all traces of make up! The Balm is so great because it works on those really tinted lipsticks and even on waterproof mascaras! It smooth’s over the skin beautifully, dissolves every last trace of makeup, doesn’t irritate my eyes, non-greasy and rinses away clean with water. Practical, pleasant and pocket-friendly (back then). Definitely a favourite!

    ResizerImage1000X1333 2

Pink Cosmetics Cleansing Balm (Retails now for R165)

I had purchased a Sensitive Skin Sample Set from Pink Cosmetics probably in the beginning of the year and have been using it sparingly just to make them last a bit longer. Included in the pack was a cleansing balm that I was super keen to try as I was so obsessed and impressed with the Clinique one and I was quite keen to see how the Pink Cosmetics one matched up.
Their 100% natural gentle cleansing balm turns into a creamy lotion when you add a little water, is not greasy or waxy and washes away without leaving oil on your skin. It leaves skin glowing and quite nourished. It removed most of my makeup but not quite all of it. What I do love about the balm though is that it has a beautiful refreshing orange/lime scent and almost seems like it has zesty bits in the balm in it giving the skin a subtle exfoliation… It’s lovely! The balm is really great and super budget friendly! Definite win in my books!

    ResizerImage1000X1333 3

Banila Co. Clean It Zero Classic (Retails now for R345)

Ok so if you’re an avid reader you will know that I have become obsessed with Korean Beauty Products! I had received this little balm as a sample from my K-beauty haul (you can read more here & here) and was completely blown away by how fabulously it works!
Formulated with rich-in-vitamin C papaya and acerola extracts, it works to brighten skin while gently exfoliating. Can also be used as a face massage balm, to do away with all tension from the day and get rid of any puffiness or water retention- amazing right? It has a beautiful fragrance and removes all traces of make-up! K-Beauty for the win!

    ResizerImage1000X1333 4

So who wins the battle? How do I pick a favourite?
I can’t, but if I had to pick my top 2, it would be the Clinique and the Banilo.co Cleansing Balms as they worked more efficiently for me but they are ALL pretty great and do the job! I would reccommend ALL of them as they really are great products!

Have you tried any cleansing balms lately?

  • We Still on the K-Beauty Train…

We Still on the K-Beauty Train…

So it seems I wasn’t wrong about the K-Beauty world and the fact that everyone is pretty keen to try it out for themselves! If you missed my initial K-beauty haul and introduction into Korean beauty, you can read about it here. I have been getting a few requests asking about where we can purchase such products. Well never fear when the Guru is near, I got you covered ladies!

I have listed below a few South African online stores to get your hands on some K-Beauty products. I have personally only shopped at one, but rest assured that I have stalked and sussed out each and every website and Instagram page of all of them so that you can have a breezy and hassle free shopping experience without the stress of getting scammed!

    IMG 20180910 214305
    edf

So here it is beauties your 5 online stores to K-Beauty Heaven!

Luxe Loft -I got my first K-beauty haul from Luxe Loft and it was lovely! The online store is easy to navigate, prices are fabulous (you may find it cheaper here than other places) delivery time is quick and the stock most k-beauty brands! oh and an added bonus- You get a free sample with every purchase!

K-Beauty Africa– They stock limited K-beauty brands, that being JOneLindsay, Caolin, Leegeehaam, Klairs, Suntique and Laneige, but it is definately the top brands of the K-Beauty world. Delivery time is nice and quick, 3-4 days, that’s definitely a win for me!

Glow Theory– Well lets just start by saying that if you sign up to the Glow Club you receive R100 your first order- Score! What I love about this store is that they offer little starter kits, so if you are keen to try but not really wanting to commit to purchasing a full sized product, you can purchase a starter kit to get a nice little introduction into the k-beauty world. They have a great selection of brands to browse through too!

Koreanbeauty.co.za– Ooo, another sweet deal! If you sign up, you get a 5% discount code for 1st time purchases- always a win! This online store definately has a lot more ‘gimmicky’ stuff than the others. Search for The Blackhead Silk Finger Ball thing, which by the way, I’m super keen to try- then you will understand what I mean.

Samika Store This online store is definitely a higher end one but  apart from stocking K-Beauty products they too stock make-up brands like Morphe, Kylie Cosmetics, Huda Beauty and many more! What I absolutely love about this online store is they sell K-Beauty sets too! For instance they have the Laneige Water Bank Cream set or the Missha Mini Set (That will probably be my next k-beauty haul) and sometimes even limited edition sets. I can totally see myself spending an obnoxious amount of money at this store, but like it said before- No Ragrets! (Yes, I purposely spelt it wrong because… just read why here)

Have you purchased from any of these store before?

How was your experience and what did you splurge on?

Would love to hear from you!
    Till next time!

  • Mini K-Beauty Haul!

    Mini K-Beauty Haul!

Let me just start by saying I’m  a sucker for all things cute and gimicy.
Cute packaging? “Sold!” If it has the word ‘Mini’ in it-  “Put ’em in my basket please!”

    Yip, Im that person!

So did my need for all things cutesey cloud my judgment on my recent beauty haul? Maybe a little.. But I dont care because I have been itching to get my hands on some K-Beauty products and that I did!

Image result for no ragrets meme

Korean Beauty is slowly becoming the ultimate regime for soft, glowing skin. K- beauty routines focus on perfecting the appearance of your skin, to have you looking healthy and glowy, therefore, makeup application is kept light and minimal.

    IMG 20180910 214305
    K-Beauty Mini Haul

Korean skincare and makeup products are well beyond most western technology and the quality and innovation of Korean products supersedes many popular western brands we use today. A proper K-beauty routine takes time and commitment but rest assured your skin will see the results.

My mini K-beauty haul consisted of the TonyMoly and the too cool for school brands. The packaging is just adorable and as for the products, pretty damn impressed to say the least! So here is what I bought:

    TonyMoly Pocket Bunny Mist

    IMG 20180907 181505
Bunny Gloss Bar – ( Retails for R100 ) Pocket Bunny Mist (Retails for R180)  from Luxe Loft

This packaging is just!! (Insert heart-eyed emoji) How could you not want to own these adorable little bunnies, especially the sad faced one!? The Pocket Bunny Hydrating Mist is amazing. It is infused with raspberry, strawberry, peach, and baobab tree extracts for long lasting hydration. Created with the celtic waters from the French park Vosges du Nord, your skin will receive ample nutrition though the included minerals.

It’s beautiful fragrance adds to the delicate mist when sprayed on your face. I like to apply it after I’ve cleansed my face in the morning and sometimes in the evening for a little extra hydration. My skin is feeling so dry lately and this is the perfect little added hydration that it needs. It’s also great to use throughtout the day just to give your skin a little wake me up leaving it dewy and fresh!

    The Petite Bunny Gloss Bar

    IMG 20180910 213813 e1536665374969
    Look at that Shimmer!

The Petite Bunny Gloss Bar is the cutest little gloss you could possibly own!  It leaves a delicate gloss on your lips. It’s not an overpowering gloss at all which is suitable to use on a daily basis and it leaves your lips feeling super soft too!

Too Cool For School Jelly Blusher:

    IMG 20180907 181425
too cool for school Jelly Blusher- Cherry Squeeze (Retails for R150) from Luxe Loft

Another brand that caught my eye was the too cool for school k- beauty brand. I added to my cart, this cute little blusher tin because I was intrigued on seeing what a jelly blusher looked and felt like. Upon recieving it, my first reaction was, “OMG I paid R150 bucks for this little itsy bitsy tin!” No guys, it’s small…

The images on the website make it look bigger then what it actually is, but I quickly got over my little panic attack when I slid opened the tin to find the softest most squishiest cream like blusher I had ever seen and felt! The texture is incredible, the pigment is glorious and the colour on the skin is perfection! Well worth the ka-ching!

    Kiss Kiss Lovely Lip Patch

I had seen these lip patches all over Hollywood A-listers lips and I knew I needed to try it for myself.  The oversized gummy looking patch is a once-only gel lip mask and promises to make lips smooth, soft and kissable.

    IMG 20180910 213909
Kiss Kiss Lip Patch (Retails for R50)

Once out of the pack it was a little hard to manoeuvre into place as it’s quite a slippery little sucker. As indicated, the lip patch should be left on for 20 minures before removing, leaving your lips soft and moisturised.

Well, it hydarted my lips in the slightest but that was pretty much it.. No plumpiness or softness what-so-ever. My lips are super dry, so maybe it’s not ideal for the super dry lips, but it was fun to take photos with!

Apart from the lip patch, I have been loving the products so far!

Have you tried any K-Beauty products?

If you want to get your hands on some cutness and good quality products, check out Luxe Loft for amazing K-Beauty products!

  • Roxanne’s Rum Eatery Review

    Roxanne’s Rum Eatery Review

So I’m pretty sure you have heard of Roxannes Rum Eatery through either some social media or through grape vine. If you haven’t, well,  you are in luck cause I’m gonna tell you all about it sweet cheeks!

    IMG 20180819 131435
    Hello Roxanne

I was invited to try out their new vegan menu that they have introduced and how they plan to save the world one Meat-Free Monday at a time.  They calling this Flexitarianism, the act of shifting from a meat-heavy diet to adopting a plant- based lifestyle as and when the desire arrives! I love how they approaching Joburg’s flexi-eating culture and giving us the freedom to enjoy both options!

    So who is Roxanne…

‘Roxanne is the everywoman. She is a head turner, a heart breaker. She is quiet and sincere, but she is also loud and strong. She is pure confidence and strength. Roxanne is funny but serious when she needs to be. She is brave and untamed. Men want to be with her, they want to keep her. Women want to be her. You’ll find her nestled among the neon signs, her complexion glowing under their blood-red light. With a drop of the shoulder, she bites her bottom lip and welcomes you in, hand stretched out. You take it and enter a world unlike any other. When she looks at you, with a gaze that holds no bounds, suddenly you’re the only person in the room. But don’t try to hold onto the moment, for it is fleeting. Roxanne cannot be caged, she will not be tamed. Come and join her, with no reservation, only passion and freedom. She’ll remind you what it’s like to live for the moment. She’ll teach you how to be true to yourself. For each of us, even those unaware, have some Roxanne within. Let her out. Set her free and be the women you were born to be.’

Now doesn’t that sound like a place that just gets you? I so wanna be Roxanne…

    Roxanne’s is a vibe…

Roxanne’s decor is so beautiful! It’s got a modern look with a bit of what reminds me of a secret 50’s-60’s underground cigar lounge vibe. Tasselled light shades hang above you and pin-up girl murals surround you on the face- brick walls. The best part is the neon lights which really brings everything to life! Every corner is Instagram worthy and without a doubt a clever thing to incorporate in a restaurant!

    IMG 20180819 134303
Instagram worthy signage in the ladies bathroom- amazing right?

    Is the grub good?

The menu is really something! Your eyes will feast and your stomach will grumble with the options they have to offer… They cater for all! Vegan, non-Vegan, Vegetarians, Meat eaters and just food lovers all round!

    IMG 20180819 131141

It was M, Myself and our couple besties!  We ooo’ed and ahh’ed over the menu and when it came time to order we wasted no time in diving in! They really have such an amazing vegan menu with tons to choose from, you can eat meat-free versions of all your favourite dishes. Pizza, burgers, tacos, salads, sandwiches, desserts. Limitless really. The new menu promises not to disappoint, in fact, it may even surprise those meat-loving individuals!

Off the new vegan menu, we opted for the Vegan Taco–  Crumbed cannellini beans and lentil balls, pink slaw, smashed black beans, corn picada topped with guacamole, spicy tomatillo sauce, quinoa and coriander and the Got no Beef? Glam Burger 150g Vegan patty made in-house, vegan bread roll, spicy egg free mayo, kimchi & greens.

For the non vegans- They opted for the Beer Battered Hake and Fries and the Mince, Bacon Macaroni Bake.

    Tantelizing Vegan Taco
    IMG 20180819 135059
Vegan Glam Burgers- Got no Beef..

    The Verdict…

Tacos = The tacos were delicious! I’m a sauce loving kind of girl, so I would have liked a bit more of the spicy tomatillo sauce, but other than that it was pretty great for my first Vegan dish. The portion size is just enough. I would say it’s a perfect tapa type meal but if you really hungry then I would order a side with it!

Burger =R loved it! He is a vegetarian and was surprised by how good the burger was!

All round, we really loved our meals.. I kept on asking how the food was and the response I got back was muffled mmm’s and in-between the chewing “It’s really good!”.  Roxanne, I think you did well!

But the real show stopper was the Guilt Free Vegan Cheese Cake. It’s topped with Tipo Tinto infused naughty berries and it is so delicious!!! A definite must try, even if you share it with a couple of buddies!

    IMG 20180819 143121
    Guilt free Cheese Cake

    The Cocktails…

If you are a Rum lover then you are in for a treat! Roxanne’s Rum infused cocktails are simply delicious! The Pauline Pfeiffer was the favourite amongst the group by far.. Smooth and sweet with a hint of cinnamon kick in the end! Delicious! Definitely grab a cocktail while you are there- It’s totally worth it!

    IMG 20180819 144902
    Delicious cocktails with collactable coasters!

Roxanne, in all that she is, is breaking the mold with a menu filled with delicious choices abundant with flavour and textures that will appeal to vegetarians, vegans, reductarians, and flexitarians alike. A home for all palates, where everyone is welcome. Why do what has always been done? Why eat what has always been eaten? Take Roxanne’s hand and let her show you a whole new world. This is not just another restaurant. This is not just another Rum Eatery. This is Roxanne

    Roxanne, you were wildly wonderful!
    We will be back!

    Food Review- Frozen For You

If you’re an avid reader or you know me in person, you will know that I’m not the biggest fan of cooking. I have my days where I will be happy to whip up something delightful in my kitchen and then there are days where I give my fridge the stink eye when I arrive home from work. It’s a love/hate relationship.

    giphy
    Me on most days

I am constantly on the prowl for convenient, wholesome dinner suggestions or just ways to save my time in the evenings. I gratefully stumbled upon Frozen for You. Who they are will simply blow your mind!

    Frozen for you n

    The Story

In 1993 Karen opened a small one-woman catering company in her friend’s kitchen and called it By Word of Mouth. Word soon spread and today By Word of Mouth has become one of South Africa’s premier catering and event companies recognised at home and abroad for quality food and excellent service. (Mind Blowing Right?!)
Over the years clients have asked for take-home versions of the most popular meals. They wanted By Word of Mouth quality, conveniently delivered to their home, saving them time and the cost of doing it themselves. This is where Frozen for You was born!

    The Menu

There is quite a variety considering they have just started up. Choices ranges from chicken, beef, lamb. Fish, vegetarian and even desserts! I chose Mild Butter Chicken Curry, Beef Lasagne, Vegetable and Chickpea Curry, Mac and Cheese, Dauphinoise Potatoes, Creamy Mashed Potatoes and Melanzane Parmigiana.

Mild Butter Chicken Curry- My favourite Dish!

    IMG 20180716 174756

    The Verdict

I am such a fan of By Word of Mouth catering. I attended a few functions a few years back where they did the catering and the food was exceptional so with expectations high and feeling quite eager to try their meals, I signed up and placed the order!
Keeping in mind that they have just started up, they have very selected areas where they deliver to. Unfortunately, my area was not on the list so I would have to make an arrangement to collect the order at the collection point in Linbro Park. I made a plan though if I want something, I find a way to get it hence my lovely sister-in-law came to the rescue. I had it delivered to her work premises and collected it from her.

The food exceeded my expectations! The meals were delicious! Stunning flavours, quick cooking time and portion sizes are just perfect and the cost of the meals, in my opinion, is pretty decent! The Chicken Curry, Mac and Cheese, Melanzane Parmigiana and Dauphinoise Potatoes are a must-try, they are just delicious! The meals are great because you can create a real buffet if you really wanted to. I paired Chicken Schnitzels with the Melanzane Parmigiana and the meal was magical.

Definitely a great option for new moms and dads, newlyweds and singles! Convenient food has never looked or tasted this good!

    Suggestions:

I’m hoping that the Frozen for You team with broaden their delivery options to the East side- pretty please
As for dishes- definitely more pasta dishes, but looking forward to new ones to try and definitely adding a dessert to my next order!

Frozen for You have claimed a new customer- looking forward to my next order!

Rome. To be honest it’s really not what I had expected. I expected more.
Don’t get me wrong, Rome has pretty spectacular architecture and the food- absolute heaven, but there was just something that was off..

So coming back from seeing Venice, which they say is very similar, I found Venice so much more appealing then Rome. Hubby felt the same and I couldnt figure out why we both felt that way but as I type this I think I know the reason why. I think it was  the fact that we felt so free to walk in a completely different place and feel so completely safe in Venice that is.

In Venice, we walked until late at night, got lost and felt completely safe, yet in Rome, we felt that we needed to hold onto our belongings just a little tighter then normal. Say’s a South African, yet it’s a different sense of fear..  Was it the fact that on our train journey, from Venice to Rome, there was a recorded voice over that advised us to look after our belongings as there is highly intellegent pick- pocketers on the prowel all the time?

    Probably…

    IMG 20180501 142822

    WHAT TO EXPECT IN ROME

Language: Modern-day Romans speak Italian, of course, which is widely recognized as a language of love and romance.

Currency: Italy uses the euro, so bring your euro notes.

Credit Cards and Banks: Cards are used all over Rome, especially Visa, but it’s more common to use cash for small items. Some museums and market sellers only accept notes. As a general rule of thumb, bring a few euros in cash with you wherever you go.

Climate: Resting just off the Mediterranean Sea, Rome enjoys warm and temperate weather with averages of 15-30 degree Celcius. Expect much more rainfall during the winter and hot and sunny days in the summer. We travelled in April-May and the weather was gorgeous but take a warm jacket and something to protect you from the rain. The evenings get chilly and the rain catched you by suprise!

    IMG 20180429 171755
    A sight for sore eyes!

    GETTING AROUND

Driving in Rome isn’t advisable—the traffic is chaotic in the best of terms and drivers are insane. Opt for wandering around by foot—the most romantic way to discover the hidden corners of the city—or use the impressive public system of buses, trams, trolleys, metro, and light railways. The systems are easy to understand so dont stress or get anxious about it!

If you are up for it, try out the O Bike dockless bicycle and discover Rome by bike! You will see them everywhere around the streets of Rome. When we spotted them, we didnt really understand it so we didnt actually use it, but I wish we did because you kind of create your own little bicycle tour instead! Note: there is a cost involved depending on how far you ride, but I think it would be totally worth it!

    Where to Eat

There is only one thing that you should be eating when visiting Rome and that’s pizza. The pizzas are out of this world and nothing quite beats those authentic italian pizzas!

We only ate pizza while in Rome, except for breakfast of course. Mind you, the one day we had it from breakfast, lunch and dinner so heck, loosen those pants and just do it!!

The place that you MUST visit in Rome is the amazing Le Nostra Speacialiatria Sicilian Pizzaria on Via Emanuele Filiberto (It’s two shops down from the Best Western President Hotel) It is the best pizza ever guys! Trust me on this one!

    What to Do in Rome
There is so much to do in Rome and the Vatican City, you could easily fill 4-5 days full of activities. Be sure to map out your must-do’s before you go so you don’t miss a thing!

Visit the Vatican: The Vatican is closely tied with Rome’s heritage, and there is a wealth of art and history to explore in it’s Vatican Museums. We didnt get to go into the Vatican as there was a massive line of people, some had been waiting for 4 hours and they were at the back. Be sure to go early to beat the crowds and perhaps purchase a tour ticket to get quicker access. There is tour guides selling outside the Vatican, so no need to book online.

Spanish Steps: The Spanish Steps, a lively staircase of 135 steps, were made famous by Audrey Hepburn’s 1953 film Roman Holiday. They are a great place to people watch and start your window shopping. You will find the likes of Chanel, Louis Vutton, Burberry etc to feast your eyes on!

The Trevi Fountain: The crowds of people are ridiculous! I dont know how people got it right with thier picturesque instagram pictures of them on thier own by the fountain. Lord knows I tried but failed when a group of kids filled the spaces around me. It is pretty to see though, Oh and I definately got to toss my coin in!

The Pantheon: If you have only a few hours in Rome, you should absolutely visit the Pantheon. It’s the only ancient Roman temple that survives virtually intact. It’s incredible to see!

Roman Forum and Colosseum: Second on your list should definitely be the Forum, which houses Trajan’s market, the relatively intact ancient Via Biberatica, and of course, the iconic Colosseum. PS- there is plenty of gypsies and craft vendours hanging around, be careful of your belongings and keep and eye out.

Apart from what I had said in the beginning, Rome is one of the most iconic and most traveled cities in Europe, with a long history to match. With a mixture of cultures from around the world, Rome has it all. Wander the cobblestone street with gelato in hand, spend some time people watching from the Spanish Steps and take in all of the stunning architecture the city has to offer.

    Rome, you werent bad afterall..

All Aboard: Sailing through Italy, Greece and Montenegro!

Copy of Blog Header Made with PosterMyWall

It’s taken me a while to complete the ” All Aboard” Series, but I think it’s because when I write about it and hit that publish button, it means that my European holiday is really over. Done. Finito. That makes me really sad because I want to hold on just a little bit longer and savour the beauty that we experienced when abroad.

But alas, we are here and I have to let go, but I’m not all that sad because I get to share my amazing experiences with you guys and in turn get to enjoy my pictures all over again!

So let me start by saying that If you ever want to plan your next vacay, I would urge you to try hopping on a cruise ship and sailing around the world instead. It is the most hassle free way to travel in my eyes, in the sense that your hotel follows you through your destinations, Which is a huge time saver. I love travelling, but I hate the fact that if we in a place for a short amount of time we have to live out of a bag. Leaving you with an unorganised bag, tired and just wanting to wear the clothes that you have on already to not repack your bag for the 5th time in that day. It’s a nightmare!

It was my first time on a ship and needless to say I was quite nervous. Being a person with a chronic illness, there is a million thoughts that run through your mind like- Will I get sea sickness? Will the climate and altitude affect me? Do I have enough medication? If something happens, how will they get me to a hospital? You catch my drift. I had serious anxiety happening but as soon as we set sail. all my worries drifted because I had a whole world waiting for me to see it.

Our Hotel for a week- MSC Musica

So lets begin the adventure- Il be sharing highlights of each place we visited, food spots you have to try and things you must see!

    1st stop- Brindisi (Lecce)

    What to Expect:

Brindisi has been an important port city since ancient times and is known as the “Gateway to the East.” Resting on the edges of the Adriatic Sea, it’s now an active trading and transport hub.

    DSC6642

    What to Do:

-Check out the Roman column and stairs, which signify the end of the Appian Way, a stretch of road that connected the city to ancient Rome.

    IMG 20180423 134726

The port. It’s a little like beauty and the beast. There’s the sea, pretty buildings, palm trees, restaurants and the view of the other side of town. Then there’s the blight of industry, cargo ships and factories. M and I sat at the port waiting for the bus to pick us up from our little trip and to our amazement we saw a massive turtle come to the surface of the water for some air! It was so awesome to witness it!

    DSC6687
How cool that we saw a massive turtle in the Harbour!

-We only had about 4 hours in Brindisi so we stayed close to our collection point. We walked around the town and saw beautiful architecture on our walk abouts.

-Check out Brindisi Cathedral, located in Piazza Duomo, an 11th centuary cathedral built in a Romanesque-style. The original church was destroyed in an earthquake in 1743, so what you see to today is the 17th century reconstruction.

    DSC6662

With the little time in Brindisi that we had, It was enough to catch a glimpse of the old town. There isnt much to the town, it lacks the glamour, but it has it’s own unique charm and is beautiful in it’s own way.

    2nd stop- Katakolon (Olympia)

As the birthplace of the Olympic Games, Olympia is said to be one of the most fascinating places to see if you’re exploring Greece or calling into Katakolon on a cruise.

Olympia is in ruin – the Ancient Olympics started here around 8th Century BC, coming into its prime during the Classical Period around 500BC. Walking in the footsteps of the first Olympians chasing eternal glory, winning would often mean a celebrity-like status and their own statue in the grounds.

With all this praise I am so sad to tell you that we didn’t actually get to see the ancient ruins as lines were hideously long! The ticket price at the time was 12 euros per person, (we were under the impression that it was included in the bus ticket price which already cost us 20 euros each, so that got us a bit agitated that we had to pay more to get into the ruins) There was multiple school children doing tours and the influx of tourists was just insane so there was no chance for us!

We did however go to the Olympia Museum. Inside and outside the museum contains a vast collection of artefacts, including remains from the Temple of Zeus and the most significant collection of bronze statues in the world. PS- There is another fee to enter the museum!

Look I get that it is a historical site but the fact that we have to pay to see every little thing is crazy! So if you opt out from entering the ruins and museum, or like us, no chance of actually getting in,  unfortunately there is nothing else to see apart from the little street near the bus park where you can grab some grub and shop for some gifts.

With time on our hands we walked the streets and gift shops looking for something to take back home with us. We stopped for an authentic greek sandwich which certainly left us with a smile on our face.. So it wasn’t all that bad!

    IMG 20180424 142415

    3rd stop- Santorini

The place that everyone has on their bucket list and rightfully so! Santorini is incredible! For the little amount of time we had there- a good 6 hours, it was enough of a glimpse for us to want to go back and spend a week or more to really explore Greece and their marvellous islands.

    IMG 20180425 123933
    View from the top.

    What to Expect:

The Greek Islands have a fairly laid back culture and one where there is an emphasis on enjoying life and everything it has to offer. You can expect plenty of good food along your way some islands have a much stronger tourist culture than others, so this can dictate how many people you are likely to encounter that speak English.

Many of the islands are volcanic in origin, which tends to give them quite distinctive and dramatic scenery. This is particularly seen in Santorini, which has stunning villages making it one of the most romantic destinations.

    Getting Around:

The ships port in Fira where you will have to find you’re up to the top of the hill. You can either ride the cable car for 6 euros per person one way which is quick and efficient or hop on a donkey for 2 euros per person and ride the donkey trail up. M wanted the full “Greek” experience so we hopped on a donkey.

    DSC6774 e1529659118607

I hated it, with every being in my body because the animals are so ill-treated and probably sat with no water all day. If there was anything that really put a damper to Santorini, it would be that, my heart really ached for them.  The trail up is rather scary as the donkeys hooves slip off the cobblestoned trail and because of the heat they tend to walk against the wall leaving you with your one leg completely grazed. Not fun at all. So if I were you, I would opt for the cable car and let the donkeys/horses/mules be. Please.

Keep it Local–  When you reach the top of Fira and get through all the gift shops and restaurants etc, you will see countless signs of hiring out an ATV for the day. If you have time on your hands, id say do it. But like us, if your time is limited then I would highly recommend taking local transport. The buses are amazing as they travel to local spots every 35-45 minutes or so and is very reasonably priced depending on which town you want to travel to.  A trip to Oia (The classic domed white washed buildings with blue shutters) will cost about 12 euros per person there and back! Be sure to buy it on the bus though, there are scammers in the area to make a quick buck or two!

Walk it– There is nothing better than discovering hidden gems and the only way to do that is by walking. Trek your way through the alley ways and discover the beautiful churchs, shop and restaurants!

    IMG 20180425 110045
    Walking through Fira Town

    Where to Eat:

There is so many amazing restaurants guys, literally I think anywhere you eat the food will be genuinely good BUT you have to make a stop by  the Meat Corner Grill House in Fira. The chicken Gyros is beyond amazing! The restaurant is cool and vibey and the staff are awesome!

    IMG 20180425 101327
Im so hungry looking at this right now- sigh- (stomach grumbles)

    Tips

If you do, do a cruise like us and stop off in Santorini, give yourself ample time for travel. In total we spent a good 3 hours just in travelling to the spots we wanted to see. This included the ferry from the cruise ship to the port, the donkey ride up, bus ride to Oia there and back and walking to pick up points. Keep in mind that it’s a popular tourist destination so it’s busy! Preferred time to visit would be April-May. Crowds are few which leaves more time for those picturesque moments!

We will be back Santorini- You can count on it!

    IMG 20180425 125918
The views in Oia are really Spectacular!

    4th stop- Piraeus (Athens)

Let me start off by saying that Athens took me completely by surprise, in a good way! A place that I didnt really pay much attention to when we initially booked,  but definitely a place that completely blew me away in terms of ancient history!

    What to Expect

Athens is a chaotic, sprawling city with it’s mishmash of streets and smoggy air, has spectacular history peeking out from all over the city. You will come across spots that have the remnants of ancient civilizations residing on the land that look practically untouched — a feeling that the city just built itself around them and kept going on its sprawling way. And then there’s the Acropolis, which has a mystique completely together with and separate to the rest of Athens.

Exploring a new city is one of life’s greatest pleasures but it can be hard when you have a limited amount of time. So we opted for a 4.5hr excursion to the Ancient Acropolis that the cruise liner offered and it was well worth it.

    IMG 20180426 101531
    Hubs and The Acropolis

    Tips for visiting the Acropolis

Archaeological sites: The Acropolis is open until 7pm. All sites open at 8 am. Buy the 12€ pass (6€ for students) for entry to all sites. It’s good for four days. Be prepared to walk amongst alot of people- It is VERY busy!

Brush up on your Architectural History: at least for a general understanding of how old things really are, refresh yourself on the classical order. I wish I did but, having a husband who loves history, I was lucky enough to have him educate me on most of it.

Parthenon: Is incredible be sure not to miss it!

Beware of Gypsies: They are everywhere and are always on the prowl. Being South African, I must say we are quite ‘sharp’ in terms of spotting a dodgy looking type if we see one. They work in pairs. If a child comes up to you asking for money or they are playing an instrument (usually the accordion) it can be to distract you while the other child/adult pickpockets you. Beware!

    Archaeological Sightings

On the drive back to the port, we stopped off at The Olympic Stadium. Built entirely of marble, this is where the revival of the games took place in 1896. It is the finishing point for the annual Athens Classic Marathon. It is also the last venue in Greece from where the Olympic flame handover ceremony to the host nation takes place.

    5th stop- Corfu (Greece)

Another Greek island we visited was Cofu and surprisingly, it was such a beautiful place.

    What to Expect:

It’s an island off Greece’s northwest coast in the Ionian Sea, so expect to see crystal clear waters with breath-taking views. Its cultural heritage reflects years spent under Venetian, French and British rule before it was united with Greece in 1864. Corfu Town, flanked by 2 imposing Venetian fortresses, features winding medieval lanes, a French-style arcade and the grand Palace of St. Michael and St. George.

    What to do:

On this stop, we had only 4 hours, so we opted for the City Sightseeing Bus Tour to see the island in a short amount of time! It’s really a great way to get around if you have limited time! They have stations situated everywhere, so they are easy to find. They offer two tours- Red Route (60 minutes)  and Blue Route (90 minutes). We chose the Red Route which does 7 stops: Corfu New Port, Kanoni Hotels: Hellini, Royal, Ariti, Holiday Palace, Mon Repo Palace, Anemomylos, Spianada Square, Spilia Square and Old Port.

    IMG 20180427 131239
    City Sightseeing Corfu

I recommend the Red Bus Route as they stop in Kanoni. There is an amazing restaurant at the Mouse Island view point where you get to see the little Island . Take a moment here cool down with the beautiful breeze and surrender to the gorgeous views of the harbour below.

    IMG 20180427 141622
    Mouse Island Views- Corfu

Check out the Forts: Visit Corfu’s ancient Palacio Frourio (old citadel). It dominates the waterfront.

Walk around Town: Most of the houses in the Old Town date from the 19th century, but you’ll still find the odd arch that is so typical of Venice. Venetian or not, gawking at all the structures was fun

Visit some Churches: Corfu’s main church is dedicated to it’s patron Saint Spyridon, a bishop who was essential in the First Council of Nicaea (325 A.D.). The saint’s actual body still lies in a sarcophagus inside the church, to the right of the altar. It’s quite an attraction for the faithful, we never got to see it as we were running out of time but from what we had read and saw from a distance, it looked incredible!

    Corfu Town!

Even though our visit was short, Corfu Island is definately a place to consider. With beautiful beaches, stunning restaurants, extordinary religious sites and rich culture & history, there is no doubt that you wont fall in love with this place- We sure did.

    Last stop- Kotor (Montenegro)

If there is one place that blew my mind from all the places we visited, it was Montenegro.

The night before, we were told by the cruise liner to wake up early for the Kotor sunrise because it would be the most magical sunset we would ever witness. Man were they right. The Bay of Kotor revealed itself in all her splendour. Glistening under the morning rays, the bay stretched around black peaks and a jagged shoreline, lined with red roofs and stone churches. M and I were speechless the Bay of Kotor was more beautiful than we ever could have imagined.

    IMG 20180428 071903
    Watching the sunrise in Montenegro
    IMG 20180428 103053
    Kotor Bay

    What to Expect:

Kotor itself was absolutely incredible. The old town is fortified on all sides, and even though the backside of the town is protected by a massive rocky mountain, there is still a stone wall which runs along the hill creating a little haven for the people who live there.

If you keeping close to the bay, expect to have a medieval feel throughout! It feels like your walking in a GOT movie set! It is a fortress after all and so incredibly beautiful!

Montenegro is on everyone’s raidar so expect a lot of tourists. Shops fill up quickly and soon you’ll find yourself lost in the crowd so be prepared.

Feline friends- There are cats everywhere!!! They really are pro cats and even leave little bowls of food out for the ones that rome around. So if you not much of a cat person, sorry for you…

    Fun Facts:

    • Medieval walls were added to over the years by whomever was ruling the city – the Byzantines or the Venetians, until it was eventually completed in the 15th century, creating a full loop around the city of Kotor.
    • Montenegro shares historical similarities with other Balkan countries. Illyrians, Romans, Slavs, Ottomans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Serbians have all controlled the rugged land at one point in the last couple of millennia or so. More recently, Montenegro was a republic within the former Yugoslavia. The twenty-first century configuration saw Montenegro joined at the hip with Serbia, forming the aptly named nation “Serbia and Montenegro”. Finally, only as recent as 2006, citizens of Montenegro declared independence from Serbia, and formed the young nation it remains today.

    Walking through the old town

    What to do:

Climb up to San Giovanni’s Castle– There is two entry points to access the steep stairs to the castle. They charge you 6 Euros per person to walk up to the castle. Being the last day, I was completely exhausted and told M that the climb to the top for me would be too much to handle. So we didn’t make the climb to the top, but friends that we made on the cruise told us that it was just ok and that we really didn’t miss much. Although the views are beautiful but the castle itself was nothing to rave about.

Ditch the map– Like I always say.. There is nothing better than to discover hidden gems on your own. So that’s exactly what we did, we ditched the map and discovered some beautiful churches, amazing little coffee shops and cafes and even found a market selling fresh fruit!

The Black Mountains in all her beauty!

Even though our time in Montenegro was short, our experience was incredible. It really speaks wonders to just how incredible the country is. I would definitely go back to this beautiful country to discover all the other stuff that it has to offer..

Kotor is definitely a destination for nature lovers, foodies, wine buffs and historical architecture appreciators.

And there it is, an end to our magical time in europe, but we still have one more stop to do- Rome.

  • Self Love: How to Dress for Success!

Everyone knows that when you look good you feel good too. Wearing the right clothes can really boost your confidence, which can lead to success in many different areas of your life. It’s worth to invest some time in making sure you look your best when it comes to clothes. Luckily, doing so needn’t be difficult. By sticking to some basic principles you’ll always be able to look sharp and ready to deal with whatever comes your way. Here are our three top ways to help you dress for success.

    pexels photo 291762

    1. Keep your clothes spic and span

First things first, whatever it is you actually wear make sure it is clean and presentable. Avoiding stained, old, hole-ridden or otherwise not ship shape outer-wear is a good place to start if you want to feel good about your fashion choices. Go through your items regularly to check they are all in good condition. For anything that’s not, decide whether it’s possible to repair / clean and if not, recycle. Lots of things can be spruced up with a bit of work. Look online for helpful resources such as guides on how to clean suede shoes or what to do about stained leather. Once you know this sort of thing, it’s relatively easy to fix up old items to look as good as new.

    pexels photo 102303

    1. Organise your wardrobe

While you are going through your clothes to check they are in good condition, why not take the opportunity to organise your wardrobe too? By having a clear and helpful system to storing your clothes you are much more likely to be able to find the thing you need quickly and so help you create your perfect look even on busy mornings. Everyone has a different approach to organising their wardrobe – some like to organise by garment type, others by colour or even fabric. Whatever system you use, make sure to maintain it so that you can quickly get to the top, shirt or pair of shoes you want.

    pexels photo 581087

    1. Have a few go-to outfits that work

Finally, if you struggle to decide what to wear, it’s easy to deal with this by having a few go-to options that you know work. Take photos of yourself in around five outfits that you like and which work for various types of occasion. Stick the photos on the inside of your wardrobe door and whenever you don’t know what you want to put on in the morning, revert to one of these classics.

Those are our top tips for dressing for success. Remember to make sure all your garments are in good shape by knowing important things like how to clean suede shoes and keep them looking sharp! Keep your wardrobe well organised and have some go-to outfits ready just in case. By following these three simple rules you’ll always look good and enjoy the confidence boost that comes as a result! When you look good, you feel good and that’s where the love happens!
