Clover and PinkDrive Join Forces in Successful Breast Cancer Fundraising Handover

In a triumphant collaboration for breast cancer awareness campaign, Clover X Pink Drive joined forces to raise funds for the “Pink for Purpose” Campaign. This campaign involved the special edition packaging of some of Clover’s beloved dairy products, raising a commendable amount of R400 000.00 during the month of October.

Clover and PinkDrive partnered up for the rebranding of some of Clover’s most loved dairy products to limited edition pink packaging to raise awareness for breast cancer as well as educate and encourage the public to get tested for early detection of this disease.
Noelene Kotschan, CEO and Founder of PinkDrive, has emphasised the urgency of early detection through screening to improve breast cancer survival rates.
In South Africa, breast cancer stands as the most prevalent cancer among women, yet the survival rate lingers at a mere 40%. In higher-income countries, the survival rate soars to 70%. The disparity is stark, which is why screening for early detection is imperative; it can help save lives.

A tour around the unit

The Mobile Health Units travel across South Africa, taking much needed health services to citizens without access to reasonable healthcare who reside in areas where health services do not reach. The mobile unit is pretty impressive and serves state of the art healthcare.
We got to look up close and personal with the 3D mammography machine which is more accurate in detecting breast cancer. The R3.8 million device is housed in PinkDrive’s mobile truck that travels through to help save lives. It is incredible that a machine like this has travelled to the most remote places in South Africa.

The success of the “Pink for Purpose” campaign not only highlights the commendable efforts of PinkDrive during Breast Cancer Awareness Month but also emphasises the positive impact that collaborative efforts can have in the fight against cancer.

Prolonging a life

Founder and CEO of the organisation, Noelene Kotschan, says that this machine makes it easy to spot minor abnormalities that may be hidden in a traditional 2D mammogram. It is more accurate in detecting breast cancer, especially in women with dense breast tissue.
The machine can produce 3-dimensional images of the breast tissue, showing the radiologist a clear vision of the breast tissue layer by layer.
Unfortunately, this game-changing machine is unavailable in public health facilities but Gauteng residents can access the technology via this mobile truck. Public hospital facilities utilise 2-dimensional mammography technology, which relies on X-Ray technology to produce images that are used to detect signs of breast cancer.

5 ways to take your oral health to the next level + GIVEAWAY

This September, National Oral Health Month, dental experts are sharing 5 ways to take your oral health to the next level + Giveaway up for grabs. Taking your oral care up a level is as easy as adding floss to your daily routine.

It’s estimated that less than a third of South Africans floss regularly and, according to Stella Lamprecht, President of the Oral Hygienists’ Association of South Africa (OHASA), many of them do it incorrectly.

Here are 5 ways to take your oral health to the next level.

“Firstly, understand why it’s important,” said Dirna Grobbelaar, Ivohealth’s Oral Hygiene Advisor. “It’s a simple step to help prevent bad breath, cavities and gum disease. Remember the teeth have five sides and brushing only cleans three. If not removed with floss or another interproximal tool, food particles and invisible bacteria remain trapped between the teeth.

“Poor oral hygiene can have long-term health consequences, including diabetes, heart disease, pre-term and low-birthweight babies. Taking proper care of your mouth is important for your overall health.”

Who needs to do it? Apparently, everyone who has teeth. Just because you don’t have much ‘space’ between your teeth isn’t a license not to floss! Even children should clean in-between once the teeth begin to touch, which is often when permanent teeth appear.

When is the best time to clean in-between? Stella Lamprecht recommends “at least once a day, preferably at night, before going to bed. Whether you brush or floss first doesn’t matter, the main thing is to do it consistently every day.”

There isn’t a one size fits all approach. People have varied lifestyles, dexterity and spaces between the teeth. Finding an interdental tool that suits you, can make a life-changing difference.

Importance of Flossing

Traditional string floss is popular and effective when used correctly. Unfortunately, according to Lamprecht, about 40% of patients who do floss regularly are not using the correct technique. If you’re just learning to floss or have limited dexterity or poor eye-hand coordination, you may find floss on a handle easier to use.

Technique is Important

Tiny reusable interdental brushes are ideal to reach the back teeth or when you have wider gaps, bridges, braces or receding gums. Oral irrigators, using air or water to dislodge food and bacteria, can be helpful, particularly for people who can’t get to grips with floss or other interproximal tools.

I have always been that person to join some fitness class. Be it Pilates, Yoga or Zumba, I always made a point to keep my body moving. Why you ask, well because I need to keep my body moving. For me it’s more than just exercise. It’s about pushing my body to work better, for my heart and lungs to get stronger. For keeping my condition under control and my mind happy.

The Sad Truth…

Life lately has been good, considering everything that’s happening in the world. Until someone asks you that one question you dread…”When are you guys having kids?” Then my world turns into a black hole and the sad truth kicks in all over again…

It’s been a little over a year and a half that we started our very short-lived surrogacy journey. To be quite frank, the guilt still lives with me to this day. I don’t think it’s something that will ever go away and it will probably stay in my heart forever.

Lately, I catch myself wondering what our future would’ve looked like with a child in it. Is that absolutely crazy to still be thinking this way after a year? Is this me still grieving the loss of a chance at motherhood?

Christmas Traditions…

Every year without fail, our long time group of close friends meets up for a celebratory dinner, just before the Christmas rush. It’s become a treasured tradition that I hope will stay for many years to come. The funny thing that happens at our get-togethers is that someone always lands up being pregnant. It’s happened every year and it’s wonderful!

There was a moment during that dinner that the girls really opened up to each other. The excitement of the new little additions to the group, the sadness of loss that some of our friends endured, and the hope that they will have a chance to grow their family was all shared within our circle. I sat in awe as I listened to my girlfriend’s share their highs and lows and couldn’t help but think how incredibly strong women are.

With all the out-pour of emotions, I sat there thinking, all my friends are or are going to be mom’s, except me.

As terrible as it sounds, the thought and reality of it made me feel like an outcast.

Rise of Emotions…

The evening ended and we all said our goodbyes. Silence filled the car ride home and I knew exactly how M was feeling. I wasn’t alone. M was feeling like an outcast too. It sucks. BIG time. It feels like as soon as we get to a good place there is something that reminds us that we can’t have a baby of our own. A constant reality check.

Now please hear me out… This isn’t a pity party post. I don’t want our friends with kiddos, or anyone for that matter, “tip-toe” around us when it comes to the topic of kids. We love kiddos and want to share the joy of them with you. This is a post where raw emotions are shared because out there somewhere, I believe so many people are going through the same thing and if anything more women should be opened about their struggles.

The Sad Truth…

The sad truth is that I think M and I will always feel this way. We will always be faced with the question of “When are you guys having kids?” or “Time is ticking”. It’s exhausting and annoying at times but it’s our reality. As difficult as it is, we will find a way to adapt to this reality. I don’t doubt that it will be an “easy fix” but I know it will make us even stronger as a couple.

Here’s hoping it will get easier…

Our View:

I was very intrigued by these two little jars, but they really did surprise me, in a good way! It has a very unique taste. Not like your ordinary, sweetish toothpaste, so don’t expect a burst of flavour. The consistency of the tooth powders waters down and doesn’t foam at all. But I can honestly say that my teeth have never felt cleaner. My teeth feel super polished and it has even taken off stains from a few of my teeth.

I get that this won’t be for everyone, but I urge you to try it. It will honestly leave your mouth feeling fresher and cleaner. Super impressed and have definitely considered moving over to tooth powders once my toothpastes are done with.
