Sorbet Salon, a leading professional beauty brand, hosted its Skin Week event and we were lucky enough to attend the Sorbet Hello Me Skin Week. In partnership with top skincare brands like Dermalogica, DMK, Exuviance, and Environ, media influencers, bloggers, and celebrities received an exclusive skin care experience. If I could, I would of attended all the days, but I’m pretty chuffed that I attend the Environ one. It was an absolute treat!
We were treated to some healthy refreshments that included shots of Collagen from Mother Kind and Be Bright. Collagen that enhances the glow from within. Hand massages, mini manicures and a photobooth kept us busy while we waited for our Environ Facial treatment.

Skin Scan

The skin treatments began with a 20-minute skin scan test to evaluate the skin from the deepest layers. We then got to sit back and relax with the Environ Facial. If I told you that the last time I had a facial was over 5 years ago, you would think I was kidding. But I’m not. It’s been a long time and that facial was exactly what my skin needed. It was an absolute treat! A skin masterclass was later conducted by skincare therapists, who had the us all fully immersed in a skin education session that had me wanting to buy all the Environ Products on the market.

Environ Cool Peel Facial

We got treated to an Environ cool peel facial which is a safe non-invasive skin peeling system. This treatment helps refine, revive and brighten the skin. The high-tech dual electro sonic DF facial, stimulates the skin to deliver significantly more essential nutrients to where the skin need them most.

The Sorbet Group really outdid themselves by showing us that they are more than just a salon for Mani’s and Pedi’s. They are an institute that offers high quality skincare brands at your fingertips. Expert therapist to educate us on the skincare brands available to suit our skincare needs.

Organic Ingredients- Highlighting my favorites

Face & Eye Oil is extremely hydrating with brightening properties. Using a good facial oil on acne-prone skin can be life-changing. The reason for this is.. a pimple is basically dead skin cells and oils (sebum) mixed together that clogs pores. I experienced absolutely no breakouts!

Ask yourself this, does oil and water (water-based product) mix? No it does not. Do oil and oil mix? Yes, it does. So, by applying the facial oil will ensure that the oil mixes into the clogged pores withdrawing and cleaning out impurities.

Jojoba oil mimics skin sebum tricking it not to overproduce oil. This balances oil production in the skin.

This oil is known for the use of ancient Japanese and Chinese women. (Korean beauty vibes? – I’m in!) Rich in essential fatty acids, trace elements, vitamin E, and mineral salts, rice bran oil helps moisturize the skin and promotes skin microcirculation. Rice bran oil has healing, restructuring, soothing, cicatrizing, repairing (reduces skin inflammation), and decongesting properties.

Why we love it

It deeply hydrates for soft smooth skin. Enriched with nutrients to protect skin and feed skin cells.

Balancing Facial Mist (Toner). This is high astringent. Soothes tones and hydrates. Balances PH in the skin. Properties of active ingredients:
It balances skin’s natural oils.
Can help reduce the look of temporary redness.

It has antioxidant properties that nourish and protect the skin.
Helps prevent fine lines and wrinkles and diminish the look of existing ones by keeping the skin hydrated.

Mud Mask with Bentonite & Kaolin Clay

This mask is clay-based (Bentonite and kaolin mixed) which makes a creamy mask. This will absorb all oiliness from the skin and withdraw impurities.

Absorbs overproduced sebum (Oils) and regulates sebum production
Cleans pores deeply
Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory properties.

Why we love it

I was quite nervous trying this Clay mask as I had such a bad experience in the past. But I tried it and I loved it! This formula is super gentle on the skin and truly gives it a deep clean. This combined with the exfoliating mud, in the shower is magic!

Our Review

If you are looking for an at-home spa-like skin treatment then Skinfrésh is it. Sensitive skin gals need not worry, as the products are super gentle on your skin with no irritation. I was excited to learn that all these products can be used in different ways. Like using your facial oil as a makeup remover. Or by mixing all the above products, you can create an intense hydrating mask. I think that’s what I like most about this brand. Products that are so versatile! It makes you feel like it’s worth every penny spent.

All in all, SUPER impressed by these products and can’t express enough of how spa-like quality the products hold. It’s simply beautiful. xx

Chin Breakouts? You could be suffering from Maskne…

I was the lucky few teens that had good skin for the majority of the time. I never suffered from acne or really bad breakouts. As of late, my chin has been breaking out, TERRIBLY! I put it down to stress due to these crazy COVID times, but in actual fact, it’s Maskne!

Everyone’s new accessory is a face mask for the protection of others and ourselves, and with this comes a new skin concern being Acne. You could be suffering from Maskne!

Masks can trap in humidity, dirt, oil, and sweat if you are not cleaning them properly or you are reusing them for long periods of time. Wearing a mask has made me realize how bad your breath can really get too, Ew.

When oil and debris clog the pores, this causes pimples. Any friction and irritation from the mask can push bacteria into your skin or even create micro-tears, which allow for easier entry of bacteria and dirt and can lead to further inflammation.

With a great skincare routine, you can definitely avoid the maskne. Just keep your skin clean twice a day so that you remove excess oil and clogged pores. And always, ALWAYS wash your masks in hot water and soap!

Say Hello to SKIN Functional!

I am beyond delighted to share my views on yet another incredible local skincare brand. Say hello to SKIN Functional

SKIN Functional- Who are they?

I have had many gals reach out to say that it’s very similar to The Ordinary brand. Can you believe that I have never tried any products from The Ordinary? Living in SA means we would have to import it and we all know those import charges can be hefty. So, I never did take the plunge but I’m taking those gals word for it!

Being the skincare enthusiast that I am, I got in contact with the brand to find out more info about their products and they were kind enough to send me products to try. The first thing they did was ask me what my skincare needs were – this is key to finding the right product for you and it is phenomenal service what they offer.

From that info, they put together a combo of products for me to target my main concerns – fine lines, wrinkles, and hydration. I’ve been using the 2 for over 2 months now, and I am SO impressed.

What we Tested

We tested out 2 serums: The Anti-Oxidant Complexion Firmer & Barrier Support. I implemented these two serums into my day and night skin regime and I can honestly say that I have absolutely fallen in love with these products.

The Anti-Oxidant Complexion Firmer

The Anti-Oxidant Complexion Firmer 10% Ascorbic Acid + 3% Ferulic Acid (R260) An anti-oxidant powerhouse! I used this in the mornings to give my skin a boost in collagen, thanks to Vitamin C. It left my skin glowing!

Remember these are active serums, so slight warming sensation will be felt on the skin. I love it though because, for me, I know that the product is working. I did find that the Anti-Oxidant Serum is slightly oiler than the Barrier Support, but my skin absorbed it and left it feeling moisturized and plump. My last step was to pop on my suncreen and I was good to go!

Barrier Support- Rescure Oil

The Barrier Support- Rescue Oil (R270) A pure blend of Squalane and Cannabis Sativa Oil to inhibit loss of hydration that reduces skin suppleness. Rescue Oil actively reduces inflammation and irritancy while restoring the barrier function of the skin. This lightweight formula gives the skin serious hydration, especially during these cold spells! I never thought I had such dry skin until I started with this product. Skin absorbs it beautifully leaving it hydrated- No oiliness at all and is perfect for those sensitive skin gals!

In the beginning, I applied the serum and my Clinique moisturizer on top. Four weeks into using the product, I was purely using the Barrier support on its own at night because it was more than enough hydration for my skin.

All in all guys, this brand is awesome! We finally have access to quality, no BS skincare at decent prices here in SA! Head over to their website and check out their range of products! How to Fight Face Mask Breakouts with Cetaphil

Aloe Unique Skincare in Review

There is no hiding that I have become utterly obsessed with all things skincare. I am always reading up and looking for new products to try and share my experiences with my readers. My obsession comes with fine lines and wrinkles that I have noticed. Along with a bit of pigmentation and broken vessels on my cheeks (due to chronic medication) which drives me nuts! I have grown quite self-conscious and really do envy those gals with flawless skin. Regardless of my petty woes, I am excited to share a new product that I have been testing out for the past few weeks! It’s local, the packaging is gorgeous and it’s pretty well priced- Introducing Aloe Unique Skincare

Aloe Unique brings you a range of skin care treatments containing the powerful active ingredients of the Aloe Ferox plant. Containing almost twice as many amino acids as Aloe Vera, Aloe Ferox is ideal for skin care as it has been scientifically proven to penetrate the skin to the deepest layer. The Aloe Ferox plant is rich in amino acids, with the powerful agent Aloin, as well as polysaccharides and other plant metabolites so it contributes to a soft and smooth skin that is hydrated, nourished and rejuvenated.

I had purchased the combo skin set as there was a few products I wanted to try out and they were having a really great special. The Skin Set included a Gentle Face Wash (150ml), Clarifying Facial Toner (150ml), Aloe & Honey Gel Mask (75ml), Age Defying Serum (30ml), Essential Day Cream (50ml), Essential Night Cream (50ml).

Let’s get this Aloe Unique Review started..

Aloe & Honey Gel Mask (Retails for R119)

There is nothing better than smoothing a gel mask on your face after a long day and man, this mask has to be my favourite out of the skin set. Let’s be real though, who doesn’t love a good mask?

The soothing gel mask instantly energizes and smooths dull, tired skin. With a super-hydrating blend of anti-oxidants, this Aloe Ferox-based formula reboots and replenishes healthy function in fatigued skin, improving texture and creating a more radiant, youthful appearance. This mask can also be used on all skin types. It’s really great for sensitive skin gals too! If there’s one product you need to try from the Aloe Unique skin care line, it’s this one!

Gentle Facial Wash (Retails for R99)

I don’t generally do ‘Gel’ face washes as they are quite harsh on my skin and dry’s it out completely. I was pleasantly surprised though by how gentle this facewash actually is! The clear, light liquid foaming wash is packed with Vitamin E and hydrating glycerin, which also has Aloe Ferox-based formula that removes pollutants without over-drying or depleting skin’s protective oils. It really does leave your skin calmed, clarified and radiant.

Clarifying Facial Toner (Retails for R99)

This is a tricky one for me as I have a love/hate relationship with this toner. On the first try, I spritz (LOVE that it’s a Spritz on product) some on a cotton pad and wiped it on one half of my face. It left my skin burning on the apples of my cheeks which I immediately washed off with water. I decided to let me skin ease into the products and gave the toner another try a few days later. After I had double cleansed my face that evening, I opted to try the toner again and to my relief, it soothed and nourished my skin instead of burning it.

I do think it’s a great product though with amazing properties like powerful anti-oxidants, Witch Hazel and anti-irritant Allantoin hydrates.

Age Defying Serum (Retails for R299)

A do-it-all serum that is VERY well priced and that ticks most skin concerns.

The serum focuses on hyperpigmentation & ageing, so it’s a reall goodie. It contains a potent concentration of antioxidants (Vitamins A & C), high levels of Aloe Ferox leaf extract and borage oil. It works to prevent and reverse the appearance of wrinkles, lines and hyperpigmentation. It’s light weight formula is perfect with a refresher texture that absorbs quickly. I use it in the evenings, before I apply my night moisturiser which I absolutely love.

Essential Day Cream (Retails for R119) & Essential Night Cream (Retails for R134)

Ultra-light, non-greasy moisturiser that hydrates the skin. This sentence really sums up what the day and night moisturiser is all about. Loaded with Vitamins E and C and Glycerin, it’s packed with skin loving ingredients . This non-greasy Aloe Ferox-based formula locks in moisture for lasting hydration and helps fight damaging free radicals.

You will honestly wake up to firm, rested and radiant skin. Initially, I thought that it would leave my skin greasy as the formula is quite thick. To my surprise, it didnt! My skin soaked it up and left it feeling soft and supple. This product is a real budget beauty!
